Makes more sense to do that when it's a general election?

Interestingly, if we look back at BBC election graphics over the last two-and-a-bit decades*...


...in so far as 'looks' appeared, elements always tended to creep in the election before the general. The weird twisting V for Vote 2001 (that I assume was designed after a watching of The Five Doctors) is already present in the Vote 2000 (and US 2000) titles. The 2004 Local and European logo is seemingly a primitive version of the 'swirling pie chart over an X' style that was present from 2005 to 2008. Though not particularly clear in the titles, wider aspects of the 2010-14 graphics were present in the 2009 coverage and the Scottish referendum coverage the same for the early elexagon-era graphics.

As others have said, I don't think there is really any need to change the elexagon - it does its job well, with it (and hexagons more broadly) becoming a neat visual shorthand for election coverage. Plus, there are only so many stylised Xs that are possible to draw - even if you go quite abstract, as with the 'pins' look.

* Every local, general, European and major referendum titlecard from 1996 onwards (though, I believe that the 1996 titles had been in use since at least 1994). Many are sourced via David Boothroyd's fantastic and ever updated collection of UK political coverage on YouTube. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find one for the 2007 coverage, so the Scottish coverage (which is to the same styling) has been used in its place.
