Imagine they'll be more early calls this time given the expected margins of victory, though maybe not so much in the key seats of interest.

A focus on reactions from real people, interviews with the likes of Count Binface and a down your doorstep angle would certainly be an alternative offering and might have gotten more younger people interested back in the day.
Would have been great but sadly both elections during the shows stint on air were when the show was at it's lowest ebb - think Sharon Davies left the day after the 1997 election and in 2001 they were in the process of undoing the revamp of a few months earlier. Had elections fallen in 1993 and 1998 we may have got something more substantial, although of course part of the appeal of the show was it would be what to watch to avoid that kind of thing anyway.
Talking of election free zones nothing more than the 5 minute lunchtime update and 5pm hour long edition on 5 News tomorrow. Jeremy Vine is on but without Jeremy Vine given he'll be otherwise engaged.

Just to point out Sky news has ALWAYS started at 9pm since its first election in 1992. Never know why.

Presumably it's a mix of picking up extra people by starting first in the hope they'll stick with you and the same reason sports do hour-long pre-match discussions -

At least in the pre-match discussions they can still talk about relevent topics, that first hour of election coverage they can't discuss anything remotely political, so it's likely a boring first hour not many stay tuned to. Can only fill so much time with dogs at polling stations.

Probably easier for newsreaders not to talk politics than ITV Sport to go an hour without mentioning England or the BBC at Wimbledon to go an hour without mentioning Murray.

I see Radio 2 will get the exit poll at 10pm presumably as part of a regular news bulletin as the schedule seems to be as normal.
Are Newsbeat running bulletins overnight on R1?

Sky never struggle to fill the 9-10 hour. The do a pretty good job given the restrictions on what they can talk about - but they can introduce the team, whip round the reporters at key counts (where they normally focus on the constituencies rather than the candidates), explain how the election and exit poll work, show off their graphics, and a few other things. With a few ad breaks, they only really have about 45 minutes to fill.
I personally like it - it gets the night underway a bit earlier and, if you're looking forward to it, that's a good thing. You can see how it worked in 2019 in the first 47 minutes of this...

The last election had Newsbeat bullitens during early breakfast at 04:30 and 05:30 so it's quite possible they do the same again.

Yes that's one I have made a note to have a listen to. It wasn't on the live 'podcast' though as that's not happened yet
