I think the last series premiered on ITV1 as well.

Unless you're in Central and North of Scotland, which is covered by STV, which aired an Election Debate with the Scottish Leaders that evening.

That's fair enough for STV. Love Island is an ITV2 show with an ITV1 premier simulcast and STV are no beneficiary of any ITV2 programming. The ITV2 shows aren't eligible to be on STV Player either.

Presumably STV viewers avoid the promos for the ITV spin off channels.

Not entirely. They'd still see them during Good Morning Britain and the first half of Lorraine, and the shows in the same timeslots on weekends.

What's the deal with STV and ITV2 these days? Isn't ITV2 occupying capacity that is officially STV's (and originally used for S2)? Presumably there is some financial arrangement between ITV and STV for ITV2 to be carried in Scotland?

Like in the 90s when viewers in Wales got promos for Channel 4 during GMTV. Which I guess was worse, as Scottish viewers still get ITV2/3/4/Be, whereas S4C likely weren't showing the trailed shows at the same time as Channel 4.

I believe what is essentially STV’s share of the second ITV channel space (or the D3&4 multiplex) was sold to Carlton and Granada when S2 closed down in 2001. Which by that time was a full time simulcast of ITV2. Likewise the same applied when UTV2 closed a year later.

Although it’s difficult to locate any online source, apparently part of the negotiation in response for S2’s closure was also to allow the ill fated ITV Sport Channel to launch in the Scottish and Grampian regions.
