Sky News have answered a question about presenters wearing black prior to the announcement in their Q&A this afternoon:
news.sky.com
Quote:It's customary for on-air reporters and presenters to wear black as a mark of respect in the event of the death of a senior member of the Royal Family.
Last Thursday afternoon, it was clear that the Queen was gravely ill and our broadcasters were dressed appropriately to report the anticipated announcement of her death from Buckingham Palace.
It's nothing we don't know already, but it's interesting that they're addressing it. When looking back at the coverage, I can understand why people have been saying "they knew for hours" even if that wasn't really the case.

The scheduling on the NC and WN is gradually returning to normal, the regular NC bulletins are back while WN have been only simulcasting the first 15 minutes of the NC bulletin throughout the day, including the NaS. The BOTH live shows on WN like WBR and Focus on Africa have also returned...
Speaking of Focus on Africa, I know that the show still airs at 1830 to its distributors separately even when WN is simulcasting rolling coverage with NC... Anyone know if that arrangement continued? How can they continue to produce the show when Studio C is in use for rolling coverage for the majority of the night in the last few days?

Does anyone have a clip of how Channel 5 broke the death of the queen as I can't seem to find it anywhere.

It’s also should be pointed out that there was literally no turn around time from the point the Queen was officially still alive to having had passed away. So unless the likes of Huw Edwards were going to quickly change their tie out of vision there was no way around it for broadcasters. So from their point of view it turned out to be right call. It was just enough in a long line of clues from the palace and indeed the broadcasters something was going to happen.

Whereas they didn’t know for hours, it was clear everyone knew for hours
The palace had never announced such a grave statement before, any health issues were always spun as being fairly minor
That first announcement Huw gave ‘a few moments ago…’ still gets me at how enormous that piece of news was.
In other news, people will be glad to know that Martine Croxall turned up today. It’s notable how the big names are having a well earned day off today - Charlene and later Rageh on ITV News tonight

I found this full 26 minute newscast of how Focus on Africa broke the death of HM The Queen on 8/9 - which only aired on the African TV partners and distributors, as the main WN was simulcasting with NC for rolling coverage at the time. The coverage is kinda "bare-bones", they basically dropped everything in the running order, aired a 10 min obit package, then have a reporter ad-lib and into a cold close.
Despite that, it's still impressive how the small production team can handle the breaking news given limited resources, while all the other resources are devoted to NC and WN simulcast at that time...
