Ken Bruce to leave BBC Radio 2 show after 31 years

Yes that's what I mean - I know they're continuing while other people cover, but when Vernon's show starts properly I wonder if they will continue.

Have to wonder if they may have had to redub some of the Tracks of Your Years with Ken going earlier than expected as surely they're recorded a bit in advance. I'd be surprised if that continued on Vernon's show, but Record of the Week is pretty standard on Radio 1 and Radio 2 shows so expect that'll continue, and probably the Love Song too as promotion for the Sundays show.

P.S. Agree with every word David said about the flaws in Ten to the Top.

I do hope the days of the awful ‘Tracks of My Yee-ee-ee-ee-ears’ jingle are numbered.

I must confess I haven’t listened to Radio 2 since Ken’s departure- I think his absence has left a massive hole in the schedule. I feel like Radio 2 are trying too hard to appeal to the older end of the Radio 1 audience these days… might as well be Radio 1.5 now. Radio 2 used to have a much more general audience. Sometimes the oldies just want music and not the classical stuff on Radio 3- much prefer the old-school style broadcasters DJs like Ken.

With the exception of Jeremy Vine, now it’s practically Radio 1 from 20 years ago… Jeremy sticks out like a sore thumb.

I feel like Ken’s departure is the biggest loss to the station since Wogan. It really is struggling to hold itself together these days. It’s the weakest it’s been for years. All their star talent going over the last few years. Ken, Paul O’Grady, Simon Mayo, Chris Evans,
Graham Norton and though she grates on me normally, Vanessa Feltz was brilliant at the early breakfast. Steve Wright’s exit was long overdue though, it’s just a shame to see Radio 2 being torn to pieces.

Meanwhile Radio 1 is thriving- it had a rough patch for few years in the late ‘10s when it just changed too many personnel within a short space of time but it seems to have some stability going again. I’m too old for it but it’s almost a guilty pleasure of mine- the Greg James breakfast show is great- he’s very much an old-school DJ. Although Radio 1 is thriving at the moment, if the current pattern continues (Radio 1’s talent will move to Radio 2 in 15-20 years) I don’t think any of them would really fit in naturally there with the exception of Greg. The others are more 6Music types if you had to place them on a particular station.

Nobody would have put Chris Evans, Zoe Ball, Jo Whiley or Sara Cox on Radio 2 in the late 90s/early noughties though. Things evolve, and just like the current oldies annoyed at changed at Radio 2 are being sidelined those of us the changes are targetted can expect similar treatment in a decade or two. It does show though there is a market for a third mainstream BBC music station at the older end of the market.

Good points except I think for the last bit - the older end of the market is well catered for by commercial stations, especially given that’s where its older presenters seem to end up.

But commercial stations are awful to listen to IMO

I prefer them over the BBC TBH, there's far too much waffle on BBC radio. You tend to get more music on commercial stations, even with the adverts. Whenever I have to listen to Radio 1 or 2 I often just want the DJs to shut up and play some music, some of them can talk total crap for England (Steve Wright was terrible for it! I remember despising him even in his Radio 1 breakfast show days for his inability to shut up). I know some people like all the talk, but I can't stand it.

Maybe you've chosen the wrong method for listening to music, then.

Or maybe everyone's different in what they like on the radio.
