Probably didn't have access to it?

Incidentally my first thought when I saw him was whether he might have been the inspiration (for the appearance at least) of the character in this Victoria Wood sketch...

...or maybe they just all looked like that back then.
That's similar to the Sixth Doctor's hairstyle. Must've been a common look in the 80s.

It appears that the junction was handled by NC1 rather than the dedicated OU Continuity suite so the physical model may just not have been in the NC1 noddy

Hadn't the OU symbol already been digitised by this point? Though I guess it's still possibly NC1 didn't have access to it.

Worth a look at Simon Andrews' YT channel - much of his material has been seen before, but not in longer, fuller form till now (particularly his recordings from the last few months of Southern)
www.youtube.com
Two birthday-themed compilations - one featuring the highly refined LWT pres for its 21st anniversary (complete with Gordon Jackson voicing the trails)
In Bed with MeDinner fans will recognise Gloria's guest before the Royal Gala only too well...
www.youtube.com
And some of YTV's (very) extensive celebrations - including a medley of the first three Calendar themes.

39 years ago Sixty Minutes ended and there was a few weeks before the Six o Clock News launched. For those few weeks Southampton did the regional news for both the South and South East.
An odd set up - it has the title sequence of a programme that no longer exists, the logo of South Today and viewers in London having their news read in front of a slightly dull age of Southampton docks

How nice to be reminded of the 21st LWT 'birthday'. We were each given a numbered limited edition watercolour of the building as viewed from the other side of the Thames, mine is still on the wall in the study.
In the video at the 4'20"position showing the preparations for the anniversary program, the area shown was the on the second floor outside the coffee lounge on the balcony area. Originally this balcony directly overlooked the Thames as the river came up directly to the rear wall of the site. Post 1992 this balcony area became part of the new canteen, and the LNN news room was built directly below it on the first floor where the original canteen was and the LNN studio (7) was newly built above this balcony area using a cantilever construction - so basically what is shown as 'air space'.

I wonder what's going on with the letters W and T on that old continuity background at 3:42?

It’s not obvious in the video, but that’s the optical going into the commercial break.
