It went out across the UK and they did give it a try:

Tonight show with Johnny Carson

* LWT:  Saturday: 3 Oct 1981-  17 April 1982

* Anglia and Grampian took the LWT feed for all of 1981. Then dropped it  ( last one 19th Dec 1981)

* Scottish on Sunday evening from 11 Oct - 22 Nov 1981 - 7 episodes.

* Yorkshire 10th Jan - 7 Feb 82 ( Sundays)

UK May not be into late night show but the UK is rather more successful as it's early evening shows.

The same can be said with their spinoff The Jeffersons which ran for 11 seasons, both shows were very popular in the 1970s even referenced in Family Guy and The Simpsons at least more than once.

All In The Family was shown in the UK, BBC2 showed the first couple of seasons in the 70s. Channel 4 showed some of the sequel series Archie Bunker's Place in the 80s as well. So they were shown over here, even if they didn't take off. TBH, you can understand why shows that are basically remakes of British sitcoms didn't take off over here when we were famliar with the originals. Similar happened the other way around when we tried to remake US sitcoms that had already been shown over here for years and got popular- the Brighton Belles and Married For Life are two key examples.

The only time you can really get away with remaking US sitcoms is when we hadn't already seen the original before the remake, like with The Upper Hand (though I do remember Who's The Boss turning up on Paramount Comedy years later). Though that didn't work with Days Like These which was an embarrassing flop (whereas when we finally got That 70s Show, it was reasonably popular).

The US version of The Office seems to be an exception where a remake of one of our shows has been popular here.

Seinfeld is odd as Sky One also held the rights to the show but give it a much better slot, You have to wonder if Ch4 got hold of the rights it would have been given 10pm slot on Friday night?

BBC also tried Grace under Fire, at 9pm but ended up after Newsnight, the first series of "Night court" was broadcast but not the rest,

I'm surprised no one has mentioned "Newhart" Series one was ITV regionally before Series 2 went to Channel 4 and then never to be seen again?

Newhart's the bizarre show where the final episode showed the whole show to be a dream of Bob Newhart's character from his previous sitcom.

Yes.

Was Full house ever screened over here?

A few of the big dramas weren't that popular across here either, depending were you lived. The biggest was Falcon Crest which got a peak slot but a few areas like Thames and TVS just dumped it into Afternoon slot.

Not sure if it ever was. When trying to look it up, things get confused with an unrelated Thames sitcom of the same name.

Pretty certain Full House was on Sky One and later Channel 4 in the early 1990s.

I've always thought the US remake of Shameless was better than the UK version as they managed to keep the cast intact for the bulk of the run.

In terms of UK remakes of US sitcoms, I'm surprised The Nanny was never remade over here as the premise is fairly simple and I don't think if it was ever that popular.

Just thought of another one- just spotted Daniel Tiger's Neighbourhood on the iPlayer, which is a spin-off from Mister Roger's Neighbourhood- which was huge in the US, ran for over 30 years, but never shown here.
