BBC News Channel/BBC World News Merger

I was no fan of the news channel but even I think it’s a shame this is no way to treat presenters who have been there for over 25 years.

Realistically I think your best hope is that they reinstate a proper UK opt-out weekdays 9am to 6pm. A simulcast of 5 Live doesn't really count in my opinion, though I'm willing to be proved wrong if it works.

Presumably post-merger the News at 1pm will come from either B or D. I wonder if BBC London will at least share a studio and crew for their lunchtime update. If they were retaining separate crew and different studio then it could be argued that one of these teams could provide a UK opt-out in the afternoons.

Clueless BBC. Typically cack-handed. Just shut the whole corporation down now - total embarrassment and awful management.

Jane Hill, Martine Croxall and Ben Brown all to be signed up by ITV.

Looks like Jane Hill is continuing on BBC1 Bulletins.

I can assure you there will have been a process.

As if there were ever any doubt she would stay... the Beeb might be mad, but they're not that mad.

They need strong presenters to be the main faces of a global news channel and I believe Matthew, Lucy, Christian, Yalda and Maryam are the strongest five they could have gone for out of all. The fact they’re mostly World presenters doesn’t really come into it.

Don’t forget there’s another 8 vacancies going to be opened for ‘reporter-presenter’.

I think it does matter that they're all World presenters. It ensures continuity for the global audience, who are now the main focus of the channel and who probably won't notice much (if any) change.

Who will present the UK breaking news opt-outs? Has there been any info on this?

Would it be one of 8 presenter/reporter roles?

To me it feels like the UK BBC News “channel” won’t be anything resembling a joined up channel, and already isn’t. A weird mix of BBC One simulcast, radio phone-ins, BBC Sky Sports News (they had a 75 min programme for transfer deadline day at 10pm on Tuesday) and showing World News.

The Guardian also reported Deborah Furness has said there needs to be more UK news on the new channel, but to me that’ll just mean a weird mix that pleases absolutely no one.

Presumably the April launch is solely because it’s the beginning of the financial year - not because the new channel will be in any way ready?
