I had NO idea that you could receive actual US TV stations in Britain back in 1991! I have so many questions.....is this still possible today? And which other US TV stations could be received on the Intelsat satellite back then? And this particular example is received in the UK, but it makes me wonder if people in the rest of Europe were able to pick this up, and final question is.....why was this even possible? I thought that watching channels like this one was impossible because of copyright.....apologies for the long post

There is footage floating around of BBC TV from the late 1930s that was (so the story goes) received in New York, so it works both ways. But that would have been via analogue TV transmissions (not long after 405 line became the standard I believe for BBC TV) and some freak atmospheric conditions.

With regards to Intelsat, well they're a global satellite company, they do a lot of uplinking from all over the world to... well all over the world basically. no different to how TV and news would have been live at the scene, just get a feed and uplink it somewhere and receive it from a satellite you can see.
