On the subject of staying on / going off-air, Anglia closing down at 4am on the night of the 1983 general election following The Nation Decides.
At least a few regions - Thames and Tyne Tees among them - filled up the gap to 6am by showing 'Bullitt' (Thames even had a change of announcer by the time 6am rolled around)

Did Channel carry the (largely irrelevant) election programme or do its own thing and close down at the normal time?

Nice to see the regions being appreciated.

A curiosity from TVS's first anniversary in 1983 - "And Now, A Change To Our Published Programmes" hosted by the continuity team, combining outtakes, the odd skit and highlights from their first year on air.
'Company' and closedown follows.
Not the best quality upload, BTW - pardon the jumpy bits.

What a self indulgent mess, what were they thinking?

I'm not quite sure what to make of it either, to be honest - has the whiff of a broadcast-safe Christmas Tape to it.
Meridian did their own, rather more straight laced, first anniversary special in 1994 (cc. Neil Miles)

LNN did a half hour outtakes/funnies programme one Christmas. It was/is on Youtube but can't find it now

That's the one. Looks like it's basically a full broadcast version of the very well produced LNN Christmas Tapes that Vince Rogers put together. Presumably they thought it was a good way to use his talents and all that work for a bigger audience
