Feels like the kind of thing Duncan Newmarch would do these days if there were more people involved in running the network!

When I worked I presentation I remember being told there was a tradition of New Years Eve closedown being the one time the team were name checked. I got a name check once at closedown but never managed to find a copy of it unfortunately.
Happens a lot these days, and as you say there's only really an announcer and director now anyway

Here's an oddity, a trailer for a programme "on Sunday at 9pm on Thames"
youtu.be
Clearly it's a three part series that LWT are putting out the first part of, so Thames want people to watch that and get invested so they watch the concluding parts, but it seems strange not to use generic ITV branding for it.

The 30 minutes of CNN news before TV-am is bizarre.

Yes they went through a phase of showing mini series on Sunday/Monday/Tuesday and they were normally promoted as being on ITV.
CNN presumably had some sort of deal with ITN at the time, a few years later when the Gulf War started their rolling coverage was mostly simulcasting CNN
Lots of clips of New Year television posted on YouTube over the last couple of days, this one of TSW opening on NYD 1989
youtu.be
... matches up with this clip of Grampian doing the same thing. If you play them together they sync up nicely:

This video can only be viewed on
YouTube.
I know there's multiple examples of that party political broadcast breakdown, I wonder how many other examples there are on YouTube of parallel clips

I believe it was Thames only, the clip predates ITN’s presence on night time TV which didn’t begin until February in 1988.
What strikes me more about that clip and a couple of others that Sticky Tape and Rust/Aidan has recently uploaded is that Tom Edwards was working the night shift outright rather than the usual duty night time announcers of that era.

Only Thames, the only other company doing overnight at that time was Anglia and they disliked the news. There was also ITN world news but it seem there couldn't be brother on new years day.

Tom was a regular on the night shift during 1987 into 1988. Also a few of the night-time laddies ended up doing daytime Friday shift

Think Tom still did general announcing shifts around that time - but this not long before he left Thames and moved to LA for a while.
Pretty sure I read somewhere he felt that with in-vision being increasingly confined to overnights, it was time to move on. And for sure, you wouldn’t have seen Philip Elsmore or Peter Marshall working the night shifts aside from election time.
One duty that was part of the overnight announcers’ shifts - before ITN launched its bulletins - was to read a headline summary (and Tom had been a reader for Radio 1 and Radio 2 in the past)

Having the chance to read the news kept Tom in good stead as when he come back from the USA, he read the news for Look east:

Not particularly standout - but BBC2 slipping in an unscheduled Match of the Day after Newsnight this day 30 years ago, to show highlights of a 3-3 draw between Liverpool and Manchester United from the night before.
And yes, that is Clive Tyldesley, midway through his stint at the Beeb.
