BBC One is available in roughly 90% of households in the Republic. The audience who want to watch Doctor Who as it goes out for the first time is fairly small (I doubt they'll switch over to RTE for a possible ad break in the middle!) it was the catch up viewers that were missing out. The RTE Player has had a fair amount of exclusive content on it in recent years which was never shown on RTE One or Two. However I don't know what their policy is now. They had CBS's The Late Show With Stephen Colbert for at least a year and I don't think that ever made it onto any of it's TV channels.
The audience for Doctor Who would generally be younger so it's possible they'll just keep it on the Player to try and drive traffic in that direction, but this is RTE we're talking about so who knows what they'll do.
