The CBS Los Angeles new brand apes how recently WWJ rebranded as CBS Detroit in the run-up to their news launch. Additionally, the CBS 2 News and KCAL 9 News brand are being replaced by CBS News Los Angeles, as expected with the new O&O plans to integrate the local stations with the rest of CBS News. Other than the new KCAL morning news and possibly the new look, KCBS’s set will remain the same, but will be adapted to the new look. Additionally, their weather and traffic department is taking the Next Weather/Traffic brand.

Additionally, there is some confusion on how the newscasts will be handled from Monday: local cable guides have changed their names of the KCBS and KCAL names to “KCAL News at 11p on CBS Los Angeles” and “KCAL News at 10p”, and the new morning newscast being billed as “KCAL Mornings” and “KCAL Mornings at 6a on CBS Los Angeles”. Although technically KCBS and KCAL retain their existing separate offerings, this means the relaunch will mean increased cooperation between both stations, akin to the failed NewsCentral operation in 2009, in which both stations’ reporters began filing stories without any distinction for both stations.

That would be interesting twist where the network affiliate station would be branding its news under its sister station. It usually the opposite like WBZ News on TV 38. But KCAL is the stronger station of the two. I think it would make sense to brand the whole morning show as KCAL mornings since all of it will be on KCAL and only 1 hour on CBS 2, it'd make sense to have the KCAL brand on both. The 11pm news on KCBS, along with 5 and 6 being called KCAL News on CBS LA would be strange, but either way it shows the management notices that KCAL is a strong station.

It turns out your idea is being the one planned for the relaunch. KCAL becomes the originating station for news, with KCBS simulcasting when network timeslots allow. This’ll mean an attempt to challenge KTLA, which has lots of hours of news, particularly in the morning and early daytime block (non-stop news from 4am to 2pm). KCAL will also reportedly add KCBS’ newscasts at 11am, noon, the prime 4-7pm block and 11pm to its schedule, with KCBS simulcasting it.

Quote:Radio and Television Business Report (Adam Jacobson, July 12th, 2022):
And, in a major move, local newscasts will no longer originate from KCBS-2. Instead, that station will simulcast KCAL-9 newscasts as part of a bigger plan to make KCAL, once the home of the legendary Jerry Dunphy and Pat Harvey, a player in the L.A. news race for the first time in more than two decades.

A good, no-brainer move. KCAL hasn’t been and isn’t as dominant as KTLA and KTTV, but it is still competitive in the ratings, and has better viewer figures than its network-affiliated counterpart, so it is a great starting point; additionally, the need to challenge KTLA is related to Wendy McMahon’s plans to increase local production of news mainly to fit their local streaming networks (a move already planned by CBS News Detroit) and leverage the CBS News resources.

Surprised to hear that KCAL news is the better one in the LA duopoly - you'd expect the one bearing the CBS name would be better, while the indies are 'better than nothing' ego purchases (bar the top few markets) for media juggernauts.

But looking at how KCBS fiddled around with a news format that sticks, no wonder they'd take this step:
Quote:For most of the period from 1975 to 2006, KNXT/KCBS-TV was not a major competitor in the Los Angeles television ratings among the area's local television newscasts. During the period, Channel 2 had frequently changed newscast titles (from The Big News/Eleven O'Clock Report to Channel 2 News in 1973, then to Newsroom in 1976 and back to Channel 2 News by 1978) and formats to styles that often became unsuccessful and even controversial.

In September 1986, Channel 2 implemented a news-wheel format for its 4–6:30 p.m. news block. this format was heavily panned by critics and audiences alike, and was dropped after only a month in favor of standard newscasts.

The late 1980s and early 1990s brought to KCBS the Action News format, in which the station's newscast adopted a tabloid-style format; the format grated on the news staff, which circulated a memo that resulted in the firing of news director John Lippmann in 1993. The station's ratings quickly declined.

CBS management, highly embarrassed at KCBS-TV's subpar performance, responded by bringing in Bill Applegate as general manager. While Applegate had been criticized for making WBBM-TV's newscasts flashier, he set about toning down the format of KCBS-TV's newscasts.

The station's ratings improved, but Applegate eventually became a casualty of CBS' merger with the Westinghouse Electric Corporation in 1996. Channel 2's momentum ground to a halt, and it soon dropped into last place. The Action News branding was dropped in late 1996 and the station's newscasts were briefly reverted to Channel 2 News; it was later renamed to the present CBS 2 News in spring 1997.

KCAL’s morning news debut has been postponed until after the holidays, according to TVNewsTalk.net insiders. There are some talent issues ongoing, as the duopoly’s morning meteorologist Amber Lee is on maternity leave, and newly appointed traffic anchor Kalyna Astrinos is still working for KTNV in Las Vegas. However, the CBS Mornings dual broadcast on KCBS will be starting today, with a shortened CBS 2 News This Morning filling up the 6am hour until the KCAL newscast launches. No exact date for the new show is still being given.

What we exactly know is the launch of CBS News Detroit. With additional personnel already being hired, the newsroom and studio almost ready, and dry runs very much ongoing, the new WWJ news department will be launching next month. Additionally, it is expected the new O&O graphics package and monikers will debut around these launches.

The KCAL morning news saga continues… TVNewsTalk.net insiders say that the new morning news will finally come to air next Monday. The reason for the move was due to some last minute woes at Studio City, leading up to the delay. The insiders say that promotion for the new show will eventually start soon.

To other news now, ABC News have suspended GMA mainstays Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes over rumors of a possible relationship affair between both anchors. Gio Benitez and Stephanie Ramos are filling in on GMA3 today.

Even considering the subject area of the thread, that’s a very niche piece of news.

Not really. Jim Gardner is/was one of the longest tenured anchors in Philadelphia broadcasting and local TV history (alongside the late Hal Fishman and Dave Ward) as, according to Wikipedia…

Quote:He currently solo anchors the 6:00 PM weekday newscasts, which he has done since May 11, 1977; he solo anchored the 11:00 PM weekday newscast between May 11, 1977, and January 11, 2022. He has covered every Democratic and Republican presidential convention since 1980, and has interviewed every president and major presidential candidate since 1976.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Gardner_(broadcaster)

To summarise things, Gardner is one of the Action News stalwarts, and WPVI has tended to have long tenured staff. He joined WPVI in 1976 and, just one year old there, replaced Larry Kane in the evening newscasts when he got a chance upstate at WABC’s Eyewitness News (where he covered Blackout ‘77). His retirement is the end of an era at WPVI, however, Brian Taff, which has all that OTT local news anchor style the Action News format is known for, has been closely linked as Gardner’s heir apparent. Worth noting that another Action News vet, Rick Williams, is solo anchoring the 11pm edition since January, as Gardner stepped down to prep his retirement.
