Worth noting this isn't a recent addition. It launched around the same time the CBS News streaming network launched a prime time news hour with John Dickerson, which airs Monday-Thursday in the same time slot. Unlike ABC and NBC's 7pm offerings, which are fast-paced digest bulletins, the show is more low-key and focuses on analysis of the day's news. However, unlike its weekday counterpart, its launch was made silently. Additionally, although NewscastStudio tells Catherine Herridge was anchoring "that week", she's actually the show's regular presenter. Herridge joined CBS in 2019 as Senior Investigative Correspondent after defecting Fox.

Additionally, in contrast to CBS News Prime Time, the Weekender has a sort of "week-in-review" format, which mixes hard news and analysis of the day's stories (including repurposing CBS Evening News packages) with look backs of the week's main stories, plus health, consumer and pop culture news (sourced from Mixible, another CBS streaming network, whose content is repurposed from other Paramount ventures, like Entertainment Tonight, MTV News, BET, VH1, AwesomenessTV and CBS-produced syndicated shows Inside Edition and The Drew Barrymore Show, among others) and a weekend planner forecast from The Weather Channel. It is targeted to a more casual audience and designed to serve as a catch-all "start the weekend" broadcast.
