I saw NBC's Today show for the first time in a while this week. It's looking great and has a nice feel to it, but can anyone help me understand Craig Melvin's role?

To all intents and purposes, he seems to be a third main anchor like GMA and CBS Mornings have - yet he gets no mention in the opening titles and is absent for the first couple of stories (which was less than 15 minutes yesterday).

There's also Carson Daly pitching up about 45 minutes in, although his role seems better-defined as the entertainment guy, just like Al Roker is the weather guy.

Craig's role is news anchor. The didn't have one from the time Natalie Morales left the show in 2016 until 2018 when Craig joined the show.
