American News Presentation

KDKA's Morning news is running on a lemony-yellow accent:

It's a busy week for CBS O&Os, as WCBS/CBS News New York is the next to receive the new graphics package, coincidentally debuted in afternoon news:

The in-between animation seems to be a customized version, as it has the CBS2 symbol, instead of the CBS eye:

The weather still uses the old graphics though.

Speaking of which, WJZ in Baltimore started using the new weather graphics as well:

Not only WJZ. CBS Texas/KTVT also switched today to these. WJZ might switch to "CBS News Baltimore" branding by the end of this week or by next week. Only five stations left to switch to the new look (WBBM, WBZ, KOVR, WCCO and KYW, which already has the hybrid brand approach but still retains the previous Linear Drift graphics).

This is how the dual branding (CBS 2 News/CBS News New York) should be more regularly used, as evidenced by the long open used for their 9am newscast:

I think that's because the 9:30am half hour is the online streaming exclusive half hour on CBS News New York , they go more into the dual branding. So TV embraces CBS 2 News more and online is has more dual usage.

Reminds me of the KCBS/KCAL/CBS News Los Angeles branding issues. On an KCBS only bulletin, CBS News Los Angeles is more prominent on the lower thirds. While if it's a KCAL only bulletin simulcast on CBS News Los Angeles, the latter branding isn't used on KCAL, but is on CBS News LA.

Here's a supercut of the new WPIX studio - including a tour.

youtu.be

The more I see of it, the more I like it. I think it's my favourite New York studio as it's brighter than WCBS (which I reckon is the next best), with more presentation areas. I'm really pleased as I've always loved the feel of WPIX's news output, but until now they've been the poor relation in the market when it comes to studios for a very long time.

I really like the subway tiles in the weather area - although, for anyone who doesn't get the reference, it might look like the weather is coming from a public toilet. I guess that's how good local broadcasting should work, though - elements that only make sense if you know the area.

There were a few technical issues in the 4am hour this morning. The window screens on the right-hand side were displaying a test card rather than the relevant section of the skyline. All fixed by 4.30.

New York Living also comes from the same set and also looks great with the different lighting.

Well, the package is not as new as you expected: it actually dates back to 2019, shortly after the Fox network debuted its current branding. All stations were rolled-out by the start of the pandemic, including KDFW; however, they didn't had new opens as they switched to the new package.

www.newscaststudio.com

KDFW is long known for not making big moves on-air, as it has been historically a runner-up to longtime ratings leader WFAA (until the Gannett/Tegna acquisition of Belo helped KDFW to profit from numerous on-air changes). They even still use the first generation Fox O&O set from 2006! However, they did allow for a fresh coat of paint as they got a new duratran with the new graphics back in 2021.

More irks... When severe weather struck Pittsburgh yesterday, they did get to air a mess of graphics: new graphics, but old style radar box and the Linear Drift blue ticker... in Arial.

In contrast, KTVT/CBS Texas managed to replaced their normal DOG with a radar pullout taking its place, similar to CBS News Detroit (picture from TVNewsTalk.net):

One of KCAL's news staples, live helicopter coverage of police chases and major incidents, will continue too; their news chopper has been renamed SkyCAL to reflect the new look:

www.youtube.com
Just watching a bit of today's show and The Desk is actually quite a nifty idea. It's basically one reporter who can front up all the kind of stories where they normally have to scrape around for someone to do a two-way from the newsroom.  Plus the assignment editor is there for a bit of behind-the-scenes colour on the current and future stories they're covering.

This nifty idea has started testing in other CBS O&Os, starting with Miami. However, they are using their weather center instead of a normal assignment desk in their newsroom. This is something very unexpected from WFOR, as they normally are not as tabloid as its rivals, specially WSVN, which has three! assignment desks in their newsplex: a normal News Desk, a Satellite Center, and a so-called Plex Deck, which they use for softer stories.
