But also in a more general sense it’s always going to be easier for the specialist presenters to stay relevant than the mainstream ones.
It wouldn’t have mattered if Annie spent her non-working time knitting and doing crosswords (not that Annie appeared to be the typical 80 something even outside of work) as the only topic of conversation on her show would be about the music and artists she was playing but daytime presenters need to be able to talk about a much wider set of relevant topics to keep the listeners interested and in order to do this effectively they either need to have an interest in such topics or at the very least spend significant time researching them so they can pretend to do so.
