Funny how your mind plays tricks on you. I was sure that bulletin also mentioned the death of Princess Alexandra’s husband, Sir Angus Ogilvy but nothing there.

A fascinating behind the scenes of the Six documentary from 1988

Interesting that the copyright line is BBC Television Training, so presumably this wasn't originally made for broadcast but was shown on BBC2.

And that clears up something I'd not known until watching this. 'Quantel' came before 'Charisma'.

Great find!

Great video.

You have to admire the professionalism of everyone using that technology 35 years ago who managed to produce such a well polished programme at the end.

You may have also noticed that at one stage the director refers to the ‘Quantel 5000’. This is the device capable of ‘doing’ the squeeze drop boxes you see on screen. In fact the the 5000 was the NTSC version of the machine, the PAL version being the 5001. I guess 5000 tripped off the tongue much more easily than 5001 so entirely understandable given the likely pressure in the gallery. We used to simply refer to it as the ‘DPE’ although in our building we only had the Quantel channels in the studio areas so you couldn’t really mistake it for anything else. A very small point I know.

Do you happen to know the relative costs of a channel of the 5000?

I'm afraid the article I came across only lists the price in 1981. I'd assume the BBC along with NBC purchased the 5000. Wiki suggests there were two editions. Painbox and Edibox.

Not that it really matters, but the 5000/5001 (NTSC/PAL in that order) are live picture manipulators, ie they can flip/tumble/spin live pictures as per many LE shows of the 80's - think 'Top of the Pops' etc. The Paintbox can only generate graphics and pictures with limited manipulation of those elements. An Edit box, as the name implies can internally edit pictures and graphics together etc. So these are 3 different types of kit rather than a variation on a single theme. But as I say this is not at all important after all this time so no need for either of us to be concerned any further - all ancient history!
