BBC News Pres: Nostalgia

I’m guessing they didn’t really go from a Newsflash straight to a News Special with a MOTD slide inbetween? Was the movie played between this and just edited out of this video?

Looking at the listings for the evening, there was indeed a film in between listed as "Race Against The Dark", a made-for-TV film also known as "Lost In The Wild" and "Nurses on the Line: The Crash of Flight 7".

Interesting to finally see the proper newsflashes - the raw satellite feed of Jeremy Bowen had previously been uploaded to YouTube

And that was satellite!!!

The BBC couldn't manage more then an in studio reporter from the African service.

CNN had both correspondents up and running and so did Sky have theirs DTL within 45 mins .

13:22 on this clip, Look East Extra. Presented from a newsroom set. I don't remember them using a newsroom set or the 'extra' branding in any clips I've seen online (or from memory growing up!)

Also, watch to the end and you get a little treat from St Catherine's Close which could've been lost forever!

Think 'Look East Extra' was just for the Saturday bulletin?

From what I gathered, they used a newsroom set as the main studio for at least a few years from around 1988 to 1993, taking in a revamp c. 1992

They did retain a small Pres studio for short bulletins.

They finally abandoned the newsroom and moved back into the studio itself at some time around 1993 - with a bizarre desk setup that Kim Riley described as a 'turkey' in a later retrospective.

Was that when they had the two presenters sat facing each other on opposite sides of the desk?

One of the sad things about the BBC and ITV having corporate looks nowadays is that you don’t get so much regional bizarreness like this anymore.

Yeah, that's the one - not sure what they were trying to go for with that. Looked even more peculiar with four presenters sitting round the desk.

Granted that the move to corporate looks has mostly put a stop of it (arguably more the case with ITV rather than the Beeb - not a fan of Reporting Scotland's stand-up desk, for instance)
