Also, the same control room staff (or shift) normally do both the 5 & 6 newscasts. Apart from maybe losing a news writer in the afternoons, I don’t see how sandwiching a new national newscast at 5:30 would reduce staff (CTV has already confirmed there’s no job losses at the local newsrooms because of this).

I was basing my guess on the Sky News Raw videos I watched and noticed the directors in charge would alternate each hour. But then again a news channel is a much different beast from a local station newscast. It's a relief they aren't cutting anymore jobs. 

And in the age of multiplexing on DTV, it was kind of a surprised that NTV didn’t put CTV on CJON-DT 6.2 (either their own schedule or simulcasting CTV Atlantic with local commercials) and have 6.1 just have NTV local and Global programming.

It is strange how in Canada this has never been used. It's always been disappointing to see how those at the top at the CBC, Bell, Rogers and Corus don't seem the least bit interested in innovating like they do in the US.
