Canada is in a bad way. With CTV cutbacks and such. But i wonder if this CBC thing will actually happen. I wonder how that will go over with the Canadian public. Having said that the situation the situation is dire. I think more shocking cutbacks will be coming it the advertising market doesnt pickup. BUt in the age of streaming.........its unlikely to change. I think these smaller countries are seeing what the future of commercial telly looks like, but with no idea what can be done. I dont know that anyone knows. People are abandoning traditional tv in droves. In North America for years people have been ripped off for the cost of paytv and internet. Now they are just dumping paying and strictly going with streaming. Killing the bottom line of some paytv providers.

It won’t happen. The conservatives in in Canada have promised this before and pretty much every Tory party in every country with a public state broadcaster promise this in manifestos. They never do it. There are only three examples I can think of;

Luxembourg - the government maintained a stake in RTL and it was pretty unique given RTL’s commercial interests. The government also enforces very strict PSB rules on RTL as part of this agreement so viewers aren’t poorly served.

France - Only one of the channels was spun off to reduce the dominance of France TV.

NZ (effectively breaking up RNZ and semi privatising TVNZ)- Let’s not even go there. It has always been a mess as we can see in this thread.

My guess is the Tories will win and will then start a major consultation which will be very divisive. We’re likely to see more of a Swiss campaign with chat about funding rather than full privatisation. Quebec will also kick off a lot about it and likely push for SRC to be taken over by the government in Montreal. In short, it isn’t going to an easy win for the new administration.
