Ideally Dan should have intervened during the interview. Failing that someone on the production team (or GB News management) should have flagged it up immediately, so that it could be addressed before the end of Dan's programme.
It's perhaps notable that GB News' apology tweet (or whatever the X equivalent is) came at 11.51pm, with Ava Evans' initial tweet that included the clip being at 10.09pm (which so far as had 10.3M views).
I think it's reasonable to speculate that someone at GB News saw the strong negative reaction (or that clip) online and realised they needed to act fast to limit the damage.
Given the recent and ongoing OFCOM investigations they had little choice but to deal with it. They've also had to recently respond to the House of Commons media committee question regarding Dan Wootton, on a different matter. With current politicians presenting on the channel neither those politicians or the channel would want to risk more questions being asked by parliament about this incident, which would increase the longer they waited to act.
