BBC/ITV Wales/S4C News

Sky News also showed the announcment live.

Bit unfortunate (or fortunate for Vaughan Gething with how it was going) on the Radio Wales special just now, the microphone used by Vaughan Gething when speaking to James Williams had a lot of crackling , causing a premature end to the interview.

Has Vaughan Roderick left BBC staff? He is credited here as 'Sylwebydd Gwleidyddol' (Political commentator) rather than Welsh Affairs Editor or with any mention to him working for BBC Wales/Newyddion.

He still presents Sunday Supplement on Sunday mornings on BBC Radio Wales, and Dros Ginio on BBC Radio Cymru (though that is in the middle of a run of eight consecutive different presenters).

Sorry to say Vaughan hasn't been in the best of health over the past couple of years - he had his right leg amputated after being diagnosed with sarcoma, a rare form of cancer.

He's still with the BBC, as far as I know, but has cut back his work schedule considerably - AFAIK, he's no longer credited as Welsh Affairs Editor, though he has returned to presenting Sunday Supplement for Radio Wales after a long absence.

Nice to see a report on a BSL GCSE being introduced in Wales having onscreen BSL translation by Erica James on both Wales Today and Newyddion. Nice to see Erica outside of Friday lunchtimes as well.

Surprise, surprise - the doyenne of Welsh sporting disaster, Catrin Heledd, is presenting the delayed MOTD highlights on BBC1 now.

Away from the footy, ITV Wales' long serving head of news and programmes Phil Henfrey has been named the new Wales director at OFCOM.

The job application for the Chair of S4C is now available if anyone wants to apply. £40k a year for two days a week.

ITV Wales are facing three OFCOM investigations over fairness and privacy concerning Wales at Six and Y Byd ar Bedwar (S4C), both broadcast on 19th February 2024, and a further edition of Wales at Six transmitted on 19th March 2024.

All quite ironic considering their former boss has just become OFCOM's Welsh chief.

Leighton James died yesterday at the age of 71.

For many years, he was BBC Wales' main football pundit, usually seen on live games and in the later years of Wales on Saturday (way back when Wales used to opt out of Grandstand around 4.30pm, ahead of Final Score)

No mention in this obit of the time the Beeb suspended him for saying he hoped Barnsley would beat Cardiff City in the FA Cup (which he had also made abundantly clear earlier that week in his other commitments)

He also did some punditry for Real Radio's sports phone-ins (Real later gave way to Heart) but finally disappeared from the public limelight around the time Wales on Saturday was axed.

Following today's events in Ammanford, both ITV Wales at Six and BBC Wales Today are presenting from Carmarthenshire this evening. For ITV, Andrea Byrne is onsite and Jonathan Hill is in the studio. For the BBC, Nick Servini will be onsite, with Jennifer Jones in the studio.

Likewise Newyddion on S4C is presented by Bethan Rhys Roberts in Ammanford and Rhodri Llewelyn in Cardiff.

And with detail light in the first instance of the story breaking, S4C were very proactive in getting Heno's Angharad Mair to interview a Tinopolis emlpoyee in Llanelli whose child was in the school.
