Ken Bruce to leave BBC Radio 2 show after 31 years
#41

The Eurovision commentary is the thing I'll miss the most from Ken leaving. He continued the whimsical commentary that Wogan had.

I'm sure the likes of Scott Mills or Rylan will be great, but neither have the whimsical observations that Wogan and Ken had.

Interesting reading some of the analysis here.. as a 36 year old I never thought I’d stop listening to Radio 1, but when Scott Mills made the move last year I gave Radio 2 a chance and I actually haven’t stopped listening since. I guess it’s because it strikes all the right nostalgic chords with me that remind me of the Radio 1 I fell in love with all those years ago, I enjoy the longer news bulletins and as a commuter I find the traffic updates really handy. I have to admit I still struggle with some of the shows and turn back to Radio 1 occasionally, but most of the time it’s R2 for me now. Because of work I’ve not really listened to Ken much, but what I heard was good, but he did increasingly feel a little mis-placed against some of the rest of the daytime line-ups. I wonder if he saw the writing was on the wall and he jumped before he was pushed.

Will be interesting to see who might take over - presumably it’ll be a trusted pair of hands already at R2, but time will tell.

I imagine most people who tuned in on Radio 2 did so just for Ken’s commentary rather than a desire to listen on radio rather than watch on TV. I can’t imagine that’ll be true of whoever takes over. I think it might worth trying Paddy O’Connell but Scott Mills would be in a better position to build up to it throughout the week. I can’t see Rylan doing it this year as I think he’ll be involved with the TV presentation in some capacity.

One of the things about Ken is that despite his position as the oldest member of the daytime line up, he's technically brilliant.

As demonstrated every time somebody else has to self-op Popmaster and it's full of pregnant pauses, or whenever there is work going on at Wogan House and they need to decamp to Radio 1 at NBH where there isn't a Studio Manager through the glass riding the levels.

But my favourite Ken sorry is that he asked if some of his jingles could be made in three different keys, so he could choose the appropriate version to match the record it was following. And, remarkably, they did it!

I once heard(?) / read(?) - can't remember - someone comparing the experience of listening to Ken's voice to being wrapped in a warm cosy blanket and I think that's an apt comparison. The safest of safe pairs of hands and a titan of radio. I have never listened to Greatest Hits Radio, but I shall move over there on a morning, come April. I wish him all the best of luck over there, not that he needs it!

I was thinking the same about the possibly relocation to Salford and hadn't made the connection with OJ, so joining those dots it seems an obvious choice.

I think the thing to remember with Ken Bruce is that he is at the height of his powers, with him currently presenting the most listened to show on radio in the UK and such move a to another station was always going to the most lucrative whilst he’s at his peak rather than a few years down the line. I think it was probably more a case of the BBC not being able to compete for him rather than wanting to get rid of him.

We’ve seen with Chris Evans going to Virgin that listeners will follow the talent, I think the breakfast show there had a million listeners on their first RAJAR survey, which was incredible for a new DAB only station. So for an established FM/AM and DAB network you can expect massive growth as more people will be able to find it.

As for a replacement perhaps there would be a happy middle ground between someone who’s a similar age to Mills but appeals to a wider age range of audience. Colin Murray would be a good shout given he’ll now be known to people as the host of Countdown but unlike his 5 Live evening show, it’s unlikely he’ll be able to work a daytime show around Countdown.

Not all of Radio 3 is moving.

Chris Evans has lost listeners and now under a million.

It's reported that Ken will be on £500k at GHR. There is no way Radio 2 could compete with that. All the papers saying the BBC will regret letting him go will also be the same papaer saying they are over paying for Ken if they did pay him more.

While some listners will move will Ken I think the majorty will stay as long as the BBC gets it right. The BBC has talent left at Radio 2 and there also talent across BBC Radio including Local. If the BBC gets this right they might make GHR line up look stale. Invest in training talent and alowing them to be creative and give them a good production team. With all that and a bigger playlist and no ads they might just pull this off. They done it before they can do it again. Also launch Radio 2 Gold.

I’m not sure Colin’s tone is gentle enough for that timeslot- remember it used to be Wogan, Ken Bruce, and Vine- so three pretty chilled out smooth voices- Colin’s much more on the louder side. He wouldn’t suit the Ken slot for the same reason Zoe doesn’t suit the breakfast show- you need someone with a bit of a smoother tone at that time. Gary Davies would be OK; Tony Blackburn; OJ; Nicki; Jo Whiley etc-  I don’t think Colin’s the right person for that job.
