I think it's just they're only using one end of the studio - Newcastle is 'wider' than some regions are 'long'!

Yup. The set goes across the width, rather than length of the studio. Almost same amount space at the other end will be empty. However, does improve amount of room cameras can move back to.

Anyone know what happened to LN on Sunday?

The early evening Newcastle edition was replaced by the Yorkshire bulletin, although this was planned as there was a combined regional weather at the end.

The late bulletin simply crashed into the News channel at the opt-out point and for the duration of the opt.

Aren't they having a studio refit? Even though when both Leeds and Hull had theirs, neither simulcast the other region's edition.

It would appear breakfast bulletins are from Leeds too. At least watching here in Yorkshire, there was a story about Teesside airport, so I’m assuming this was for the benefit of NE&C viewers.

Could this all be to do with the work on the new set? Maybe its launch is imminent.

Newcastle has been on a temporary set for the last few weeks. This doesn't explain why Sunday's bulletins didn't appear as planned. The disappearance of the late edition was definitely a last minute technical failure as there wasn't even time to arrange an opt to any different region.

Regions will get London by default if they do not opt. The BBC NE&C transmitters did opt out of BBC 1 London on Sunday night but given they switched to the News channel this switch must have happened somewhere other than Newcastle. The Newcastle gallery does not have a quality feed of the News channel to switch to.

If there's no opt arranged with a neighbouring region, they take the network feed which outside Breakfast has the NC. It's only at Breakfast that network takes London regional bulletins.

That seems quite poor for the sustaining feed to crash into the News Channel if the NC isn't taking the preceding network bulletin. Surely it's no great hardship for NC1 to stick in an ident with a "Now on BBC One we're sorry that we can't bring you your regional news right now, instead we join the BBC News Channel" announcement rather than crash into it?
