I wouldn't say there's anything hugely bad technically with these episodes either, particularly considering this would have been a new way of making programmes at the time.

I agree. As a layman I think the only thing I spotted was the stings in and out of breaks, but that felt more like a creative choice that changed soon after, as discussed earlier in the thread.
From a layman’s perspective I think the production standards hold up incredibly well and the team involved should be proud of the episodes, not ashamed.

The only thing that stands out as being a bit iffy is the sound quality in the first few episodes but it soon improves.

Certainly when you compare it to the technical mess of Triangle, which was another early use of portable video equipment on drama.

The only stuff I perceived in the first few episodes was some hammy acting but as the episodes go by the actors seem increasingly at ease with their characters.
Oh and there was a couple of awkwardly staged pauses to allow for the 'end of part one' caption in the first 10 episodes. Wise decision moving that to a card.

While I think about it in pretty much every Sheila and Bobby scene, the New Year's episode with the banjo really had Royle Family vibes.
Was Damon farting earlier in that episode the first time it had been done in a soap?
Also very Royle Family-esque, a shame Simon O'Brien wasn't cast on there as well
Another thing that stopped after a few episodes was superimposing Phil Redmond's credit over the final shot then fading in the blue background, they just cut straight to the blue background. There was dodgy fringing and shimmering around the text on those episodes, I'm guessing they had issues with the keying which is why it stopped.

I think Caroline Aherne said she wanted Sue Johnston and Ricky Tomlinson after seeing them together in Brookside. It's also interesting to note that Sheila works in a bakery and so did Barbara Royle.

Well I thought that was obvious really. Would be be too much of a co-incidence for them to be cast as husband and wife again otherwise.

Looks like it's only 5 episodes being put up this week.
