So BBC One North West HD is finally available, but having retuned, tonight’s slight drizzle has been enough to knock out the signal even on SD, across most channels.

Are they trying to force us to stop watching via an aerial!?

Well "BBC ONE NWst HD" which as clumsy acronyms go is pretty clumsy - just "BBC ONE NW HD" would be fine.

Also how does overspill work on Freeview - does it only add channels which have a regional variation to your main channels?    For example I've long had Wales and West Midlands variations of BBC1, BBC2, ITV1 and ITV1+1 variations in the overspill sections (our aerial points to WInter Hill), and now BBC1 West Midlands HD and ITV Central HD (but not the Wales equivalents) but not other streams of other channels on those muxes.

I think you must live pretty close to me. I don’t mind getting Wales Today, but hate all the rest of the BBC One Wales stuff - different continuity and often different programmes. I just want normal BBC One with Wales news.

It’s not like Wales is any different from the North West of England.

Have gone through Central, Wales and Granada as our main service over the years (had the three in different rooms at one point) but ultimately as aerials were upgraded to keep up with digital TV Granada is most stable where we are (and at one point was the only one that had all the muxes). Pick up BBC Wales in SD though which generally is fairly stable.

Did have issues with Freeview HD for a while (pretty much lost it) but a new amplifier in the sorted that out.

Ironically, what's on the screen there in 2018 looks very like the new Studio B style regional backgrounds.

I was never really a fan of the 'bar stool & bistro table' set up for Breakfast, but the moving background was nice as I used to wait for the birds to fly past emerging from behind the vertical Spotlight banner graphic and I liked the rippling water effect.  I'm easily pleased at 06:30 when having my morning cuppa. 

What you actually saw was just the presenter and the table/laptop, with the screen in full view behind. You didn't see the trolley carrying it or all the equipment underneath. There were no wideshots. That's what made it inferior to sitting at the desk (as they do now) or on the sofa (as pre-bar stool).

The main vista behind the desk in Plymouth for other programmes is already very similar to the NBH-B style sets, it's just changed using lighting effects rather than an LED screen. The only difference is they have to use plasma screens to display graphics for news items - but I can live with that.

Same i didnt like the bar stool or table, but the backdrop was very good as i always watched for the birds too haha, be nice if they could do that for behind the desk now? 

its like when watching Itv West Country i was for the old livery First Great Western Train to go over the Tamar  :-P

Same i didnt like the bar stool or table, but the backdrop was very good as i always watched for the birds too haha, be nice if they could do that for behind the desk now?

Somewhat related, but I used to live in North Wales and I know a lot of people from there that use Winter Hill because the signal from the Welsh transmitters is incredibly weak.

I think it was the case that up until the ITV generic look came in, Granada used to feature North Wales on their weather map because of this

Funny to think that although Moel-Y-Parc is for north east Wales, there was a time it’s signal stretched very well into large chunks of Merseyside and Cheshire. It was a common complaint at DSO, but I don’t think it’s been the case since.

I don't know whether Granada broadcasted in Welsh but it amazed me how much technical wizardry TWW and HTV had to use to broadcast up to three different services to "English Wales", "Welsh Wales" and the West before S4C came along (NB I don't know about TWW/TDC).

WWN planned to use that material to offset the huge requirement for Welsh-language programming that had been forced upon them. When WWN came on air, Granada promptly dropped the Welsh programmes – probably in a mistake attempt to help WWN by encouraging Welsh-speakers to tune away. Instead it was a crushing blow.
