Irish TV Programmes

That era of not telling the viewers who the guests will be is now long gone - sorry, we don't live in a world with no alternatives, that idea might have been perfect for Gay Byrne, who held a captive audience, especially then those who had no access to the UK channels, but in 2023, the Irish viewer has so much choice, you need to tell them who the guests are, as they will not be prepared to tune in and wait 90 minutes or more to see who is on.

RTÉ's DG Kevin Bakhurst has written to all of the RTÉ staff members on details of the broadcaster's outline document today.

He told them that the outline document was approved by members of the RTÉ board this morning.

He will discuss details of the outline document with them early next week before it goes out for wider publication.

There was also more details shared this evening about a workaround proposal from RTÉ to the Irish Public Accounts Committee on the note about the virtual meeting which discussed Ryan Tubridy's contract with Noel Kelly and former RTÉ DG Dee Forbes.

RTÉ have said that they will provide an extended summary of the note about the virtual meeting which discussed Mr Tubridy's contract. However; RTÉ want the details of the note to be discussed with committee members in private away from public sessions of the public account's committee. RTÉ have said that talking about the details of the note in public would result in a breach of client-solicitor confidentiality.

Still no sign of Dee Forbes going public at any time?

Irish media outlets are reporting that the new strategic vision for RTÉ, to be published tomorrow, will include 400 redundancies for it's staff between now and 2028.

40 of those redundancies will take place immediately.

RTÉ's +1 TV channels and some of RTÉ's digital radio channels will be closed as part of the cutbacks.

More money will be spent by RTÉ on independent productions. RTÉ will also increase programme production in regions outside of Dublin.

RTE Television only needs RTE One, RTE Two and RTE Jr - RTE News Channel is a waste of a channel, just simulcasting RTE One and Radio 1 news content, it can close.

+1 channels are almost not needed anymore - everyone streams, everyone can record, it really is only for a much older generation, but sadly it is an expensive concept

RTE Radio doesn't need digital channels, lose are a thing of the 2000s, when digital radio was new and fresh - concentrate on Radio 1, 2FM, Lyric, R na G and put new programming from the digital stations into those four stations where needed.

It doesn't need RTE Jr either then given that it's basically just a time shift of the programming that goes out on RTE Two .

Is the transmission cost  on Saorview  their rationale for closing the digital radio stations because retiring 5 or 6 hard drives doesn't seem like it would save much money

Karen Koster is leaving The Six O'Clock Show on Virgin Media One.

Could we see Una Healy go full time?

I’m not sure about that, there are two factors that would play against that.

Firstly, the Saorview rate card is designed to guarantee 2rn a minimum amount of income per multiplex, so that the transmission charges are calculated as a percentage of the cost of operating the multiplex. What this means is that less services increases the cost for the remaining services on the multiplex,

Secondly, with Saorview, RTE are ultimately paying themselves, as 2rn is a wholly owned subsidiary, and 2rn will have to continue to operate the multiplex concerned in any event.

The plan is due to be published in full today, though of course a chunk of its headline items have now leaked.

AFAIK RTÉ Jr is for preschoolers mostly, TRTÉ on RTE2 for older kids, similar to CBBC/Cbeebies
