See, I never liked that one. It was obviously excellent technically, but I think it was really lacking something. I can see why it didn’t last very long. The next set was MUCH better:

Those BBC HD idents were great.   Always thought they should have been re-edited for BBC1 and I guess ultimately they were as the Lens is a similar concept, though a little less fun.

I'm sure today is the first time I've ever seen the original 'gems' ident which preceded it. However, my brain is now made of dust so I may well have just forgotten seeing it. Confused

That was also nice, but didn't last very long.

I just don’t know why they didn’t have the BBC HD logo in white on those rather than in black with the dodgy ‘I’ve just discovered Photoshop layer effects’ outer glow.

Gosh - even though the notion of a dedicated BBC HD channel is obviously very backward in comparison to what's available now, I do miss it. The presentation felt very premium.

See, now you've made me go off down a lovely rabbit hole again looking at my favourite international BBC idents, and it makes me wonder why things like this were never used in the UK . . .

Need to log in to watch though but yes, BBC Arabic looked fantastic. This is exactly why BBC News needs to be allowed not just to break the mould but throw it out too.

Plus, an awesome music package composed by Mr. "ITV News" himself Dave Hewson no less. If only someone could mash up the basic rhythms of this with Mr. Lowe's pips and drums / percussion. That would have been one magnificent audio suite going forward from 2008.

Also using the BBC logo itself was so far outside of the box it was practically still inside said box.

Very much getting ITN News Channel from the audio.

Backwards and BBC... perhaps it is exactly what they need. it would be a good framework for a 4K service. I have fond memories of the BBC HD channel and wished when BBC Three closed down originally they used a revived BBC HD channel as a placeholder showing reruns of various dramas and comedies, perhaps the revived BBC Three would not had had to use awkward EPG positions.

I agree. The BBC produce many of their dramas and documentaries in 4K/UHD/HDR and an increasing number of people have TVs capable of viewing these, but there is no brand associated with that specific service through iPlayer, which seems to be a 'never-ending-trial'.

A fair amount of UHD sport as well, and the coronation next week.
