The BBC, and more specifically Tim Davie, needs to very quickly think long and hard about its policies and guidelines. It's going to have to stand down from its hardline but inconsistent stance - and fast. Humiliating but is the only feasible way out - though undeniable that potentially irreparable damage has been done here.

If it doesn't then the current mutiny may well spread even further than it has done already, beyond BBC Sport. And if that happens then the position of many of the head honchos of the BBC including the DG will become completely untenable. Though of course the government won't be forcing them out will they.

I think the DG can bunker down until the point where big talent start attaching his name personally to this failure and directly call into question his own (already questionable) impartiality. At that point, it's sandwiches and roadmap time.

He's got 48-72 hours to pull a rabbit out of the hat.

Don’t forget that the BBC News loves talking about the BBC and (as others have already pointed out) that hasn’t helped this story. Otherwise it could have just died down and disappeared.

Now it is a full-blown BBC crisis, to go alongside the Blue Peter cat, Ross-Brand and Clarkson’s punch. And it’s all their own doing this time.
