Closedowns and Sign offs appreciation thread

TVNZ had a great little closedown animation starring a character called Goodnight Kiwi

Here's it from 1975

And it's last broadcast in 1994

And then it was remade and brought back in 2019

This time as part of an item inspired by Cbeebies Bedtime Story

Can't believe this thread has gone through 2 full pages with no mention of Central's beautiful starry night sequence.

Talking of which, when was Central's beautiful starry night closedown sequence introduced? Was it either November or December 1985 with the Central Cake logo which lasted until April 1987 before Central eventually started its 24-hour broadcasting?

If the dates of the various closedowns on YouTube are to be believed it was November 1985.

There’s a non-starry closedown with the cake logo dated 30th/31st October 85, and one with the starry night sequence dated 23rd November.

This is an odd one, it seems they used a programme slide as the test card with tone after closedown. But did they forget to load the test card into the system or could there have been a problem?

Anyone know what would have caused the closedown ident to be yellow and why the globe reappears after closedown?

That's odd, in that era it should be a green globe and white text. Seems like they somehow used the 1974-81 schools ident palette instead?

The shooting star as the lights turn off is a nice touch.

The former was probably just the wrong thing cued up. Interesting that the ident had been updated to remove the BSB logo (and add 'British Sky Broadcasting') but the menus and other presentation elements still had the BSB logo.

The latter was a thing that happened every so often - ISTR someone who worked in continuity at the time said that the colours could just be changed with a rotary knob - and they'd sometimes make it pink on valentines or whatever.

Yep. Real swansong for the genre, amazing they bothered given the clear direction of travel by this point was toward 24 hr broadcasting.

One recent upload of the eclectic (and slightly erratic) 'EJHearn Archives' has a few closedowns in a row - TSW, Westward, Thames, Yorkshire and Tyne Tees, starting at 34 mins in

After an ident and a few seconds of black, it appears that the Sky box used to record this from automatically changes to Channel 998 so I’m guessing this was because the EPG slot for ABC1 was removed rather quickly and therefore the box defaults to 998?
