As with the desks in the 2012/13 sets, I would imagine the 'core' of the desk in B is built into the set and effectively irremovable - they've clearly thought ahead and it's a lot more seamless that the odd mini-desk extension that Belfast have.
That said, it does seem a little bit unnecessary to me sizewise - Sunday with LK has already demonstrated that you can fit three guests to the presenter's left and there's clearly room for at least one correspondent on the presenter's right, which is all you'd usually have for a local election - so I assume it is there for a bit of symmetry and to allow the election front panel to 'fit in' better. Though, it does seem a bit premature to have that front panel on the desk already, especially considering the limited coverage that local elections get in network bulletins.
I'm guessing that they decided with the election panel/screens in front of the desk it looked better with the left extension. Also, as local election coverage acts as a rehearsal for the general election it probably made sense to utilise it.
