I don't know anything about this sort of thing, but surely you can't trademark a word as commonplace as 'Talk'?

The Talk logo in the new application is figurative, so applies to that design not the word 'talk'
You are right in thinking you can't easily TM the generic word 'talk'
Many reasons to trademark the graphic illustration, not least in that it offers protection from clones/mocks and how the material is distributed. So for example a tiktok mash up of a Talk TV clip might get a fair use exemption for a clip of a Piers rant, but won't necessarily get around the use of the Talk TV graphics - leaving legal routes for takedown notices.
Shame they're sticking with the rubbish logo. Good graphic design should look great flat and static and then animated/treated. This only just about works on screen, even then its unbalanced and ugly
