C4 Programme Commissioning Woes

Doubt it will get past series 2. Channel 4 probably need to be seen recommissioning something so this is it.

Production of 24 Hours In A&E has been halted and no new episodes will be filmed this year. Seems as if they will show episodes this year but ones that have already been filmed and not shown yet.

I think part of the problem for C4 is the degree of homogenisation amongst the main channels. Back in the 1990s there were programmes (The Big Breakfast etc) that were distinctly C4 and you knew the BBC could never do successfully.

C4 is currently screening Stacey Solomon's Renovation Rescue, which could easily be a show on any of the 5 main channels. Stacey has of course recently finished another series of Sort Your Life Out on BBC1.

Yeah the Stacey Solomon show is really indicative of how C4 seem to have forgotten how to do, well, C4 shows. It’s something that could very easily be on BBC One.

They just need new leadership to remember that C4 is there to create programmes with a distinct voice and character.

To be fair Renovation Rescue is the sort of programme C4 has been strong in for years - if it was hosted by George Clarke it would feel very C4.

It's a genre that's been done to death. Similarly, every channel has a blue light series now it seems so 24 Hours in A&E isn't impactful as it once was. They perform well for Channel 4 but that's nothing as their output on the whole is woeful.

Yes but I think the problem is that the format has been aped by other broadcasters to the point where the show feels like a copy of a BBC One show (particularly as she has hosted similar programmes on BBC One) - it no longer feels distinctive

The production company behind 24 Hours in A&E were also responsible for Alone so they have two reasons to be unhappy with Channel 4 this week. Like with Gogglebox and Bake-Off, C4 should get rid of 24 Hours in A&E and Police Custody and let Channel 5 have them.
