We don't need to go to extremes on this though - it served the BBC well for nearly a quarter of a century and the new version would be able to do the same.
One of the reasons it worked so well though is because the day it came in that presentation wise at least on the day the logo came in the old one went out, other than on endcaps on shows made before the change was implemented. The fact this time around the old logo is still so prominent two years later in some presentation elements (particularly politics) and still being used on programmes filmed long after the logo was introduced is why the change isn't as effective as it should be - and that's nothing to do with the design, it's all about the execution - and frankly there is no excuse for it.
