I'm sure there will be viewers out there sending their thoughts to Newswatch / complaining on Twitter about how much air time the BBC has given to George's passing today, but for what it's worth, they have done a sterling job in what must be very trying circumstances - and what a powerful but understated ending to tonight's News at Six.

He had an ability to make even the worst news seem palatable which is a skill I don't think many journalists have these days. A very modest man and a very brave one. RIP.

If you worked with a senior colleague on one of the most watched news bulletins in the UK; this sad news is going to have a major emotional effect on you if they are not there anymore.

What an amazing gentleman, a great family man, a fantastic correspondent where many a story was told, a fantastic presenter who knew how to deliver a story, and who presented the very first GMT branded bulletins on BBC World News, very sad and yes Moz said cancer is a dreadful thing and has taken many lives too early.

Rest In Peace, George Alagiah.

Broadcasting House will never be the same without you.

"Please stand by for further details, as we return you now to your regularly scheduled program. Hopefully."

I don’t know how many times I’ve become overwhelmed with sadness today. I am so genuinely devastated. He always came across as such a genuinely kind and caring man.

I remember seeing him reporting live from the BBC Election Bus from Dumfries in 2005 when I was just about to head off to university to study journalism.

I ended up going down another career route, but if I was ever to have become a journalist … I would have only hoped to become as half as good a journalist he was.

Rest in peace George

An absolutely crushing day.

I applauded those who've shared their own cancer experiences, I can't.

I've not stopped crying since it first broke.

I feel so much for everyone who knew George, family, friends and viewers.

We've experienced the most incredible outpouring of love and emotion and rightly so.

RIP Warrior Alagiah and so much love to everyone you touched.

The 10 also had George passing away as a top story, and aired a tribute to George in the end as well - first from Reeta, then a pre-recorded from Sophie (sitting in the guest seat) and, finally, George in his own words.

Everything has already been sad. So terribly sad. It's amazing the strength he had to fight this terrible illness for so long, with such optimism and always coming back to work, whenever he could. Broadcasting has lost a giant and with all the latest developments at the BBC, it truly does feel like an end of an era.

The only thing I can do, is a screencap tribute. George was the only domestic face World viewers had the privilege to watch daily, for years.

I had completely forgotten that George was also the BBC's Africa correspondent before becoming the lead presenter on the Six from where he was very passionate about his work covering issues about the continent as much as his presenting ability.
