Others described an area larger than their actual coverage area (Scottish) or only part of their region (Yorkshire, TVS and most extremely of all Harlech).
Well yes, HTV was the oddest name for an ITV station - named after the person who founded it.

It is of course a place in the region too, this was also the case with Carlton which is a small town in Nottinghamshire

Surely Granada beats that – named after the founder’s favourite Spanish holiday destination.

Not that Nottinghamshire was covered by Carlton when they first came on air.

A few of the earlier ITV stations were named after their parent companies or came about as the merger of other companies.

ATV born out of Lew Grade's company after it was merged with the ITC, and Rediffusion was partly owned by a newspaper group. ABC was of course a chain of cinemas.

Westward was a relatively odd name I felt, though I can see why they went with it.

Westward may have been so named because of this:

One of the odder things about ATV is that for its first few weeks it was also called ABC, which is what Grade & co had planned to call it, and the change to ATV was done virtually overnight when the other ABC (the one owned by the cinema chain) threatened to sue.

That's very true, although it predated the TV station by a couple of decades

Yes apparently named after the town of Westward Ho! as it was where Peter Cadbury's favourite golf course was. There's also a link to the novel of the same name, it being set in Elizabethian times and featuring Francis Drake, and Westward TV's logo being The Golden Hind.

However it is of course an adjective meaning to go west so it's a relevant name in itself

Associated Rediffusion was part owned by Associated Newspapers. When they sold up it changed its name to just Rediffusion.

Why was BBC News presentation so fragmented up until 1999 or so?

Are there any Freeview transmitters that have more than Freeview Lite, but not the full suite of multiplexes (excluding local multiplexes)?
