Gladiators re-revival

Unsurprisingly, the Mirror reports that it will return for a second series. Talks with all 16 current Gladiators and both of the Walshes are underway. A celebrity special is also likely. It is set to film iin Sheffield in August.

Don't think this is all that surprising. They will probably reveal if its coming back for a second series after the final, but hopefully if there's going to be a celebrity special, they will extend the run to an "acceptable" but not "overly long" length number of episodes: the OG series was around 15 episodes for civilians, with scope for 2 specials if required.

Now that they have done one series, they know what works and what doesn't, so I'm sure any second series will have many improvements upon what we've seen in this run. Hopefully less injuries!!

The Mirror's source is this speech by the director general. He mentioned Gladiators alongside Strictly, Eurovision, sport and elections as major events they'll be focusing on.

Shame it's the same number of episodes, not an extended run.

I wasn't sure if the "11 x 60'" referred to the currently airing series or the newly commissioned one and had my hopes up that it referred to the former and we would then get more episodes in series 2 (ideally 15 to have 8 heats / 4 quarters / 2 semis / final as per series 2 - 7 on ITV).

I guess not!

I noticed that you can actually apply to be a gladiator on the website, as well as a contestant. They must be banking on a few not returning then.

Could be that, or they just want to have a larger pool of Gladiators, to avoid the situation with the Edge where it was just the same 3 gladiators (6 in total: 3 men, 3 women) being used on rotation, and probably to just have the options in case any of them get injured. Since the run of episodes looks like it will be the same as the first one, they likely don't want a situation developing where they end up not having enough Gladiators by the end.

I see no mention of them wanting new Gladiators. Just people who "have the speed and skill to take on the superhuman Gladiators".

I would have thought there's a closed process for Gladiator applications - not going to let any old Tom, Dick or Harry parade under the title of a Gladiator if they can't even get up on the Duel podium without being out of breath en-route.
