I don't think they had any stand in Gladiators. If Comet had been replaced (and her injury was early enough that she could've been), there'd have been one more female Gladiator than male ones, instead of the same number of both genders. I think they just gave Sabre (who of course was later also injured, but near the end of production) and Diamond more air time.
There's nothing stopping a contender from later becoming a Gladiator though. Eunice Huthart won series 3 in 1994, did the next set of stage shows as a Gladiator called Blaze, but then didn't appear in that role on TV because she wanted to compete as a contender on International Gladiators instead (which she also won). If they do need some replacements, people like Wesley and Bronte would fit the bill, they could definitely recruit from the series 1 contenders.
