I didn’t finish reading the Atlantic with the same positive feelings toward Licht that you describe; rather, I feel a new sense of ambivalence towards the chairman. Chris is presented as this smart, successful newsman capable of bringing nuance to the network in the beginning. Yet his answers about ideology feel surprisingly smug and elitist to me. And his actions and blasé attitude towards his mistakes leave me scratching my head. For a man that talks about facts and the absolute truth I’m left with the feeling that he himself isn’t telling the truth or the whole story. It’s almost like he’s so crippled by the fear of failure that he avoids any meaningful interaction with staff and public honesty about himself.
Is he capable of overhauling CNN and finding the right path forward? Probably. But I’m not sure he can do it before he reaches his breaking point.
