Good decision to slash those totally unrealistic, outrageously high salaries. Most of these ''star'' anchors can't equal what they earn and ratings/ revenue they bring to the network so it's about time some balance was achieved there
CNN could become more like the BBC with regular news bulletins every hour, keeping the primetime hours as more anchor driven. That wouldn't be a bad thing.
I agree about the salaries. Lets be frank newsgathering is bloody expensive. CBS's 60 Minutes can justify its cost because it brings in the ratings. Sadly for CNN its been so badly damaged, by a number of factors (internal and external) its gonna be hard to fix. The US is so divided that primetime is a battlefield and if you dont fit into one of the political camps where do you fit. Because before Zucker started his siege on the channel, they played it straight down the middle politically and ratings sunk below FNC years ago.
THey have effectively dismantled their international news operation to focus on US politics, and they are seemingly no longer interested in or cant adequately compete. Unless the BigWigs are prepared to reassemble the global news operations, but again its so expensive.
But the NYTimes is one the most respected newspapers globally. And it has a "posh", upscale, upmarket brand. Can Thompson reverse CNN, i think its near impossible. But I hope for the best.
