ITV Programming

Partly because it competes with the Beeb, but also because it stops ITV from having a continuous rotation of presenters that won't take off with the audience. CITV's axing from the weekend morning schedules would've been a perfect opportunity to do this as well!

But GMB itself has a continuous rotation of hosts that won't take off with the audience. It doesn't particularly matter if the weekend hosts change each year - indeed there has been more variety in that slot over the last decade than any slot in daytime. It's a slot they can afford to take risks in.

IIRC those weekend shows fulfil ITV Breakfast's indie quotas.

GMB could air a reduced weekend version which is entirely pre-recorded, just as they do for Christmas Day - a simple 90 minute programme from 7am to 8.30am would suffice, and be a lighter look back at the week, along with celebrity interviews etc. It wouldn't cost much to make, as the two shows could easily be filmed on Fridays after This Morning has ended.

I doubt it would cost them that much to make, considering it is pre-recorded, but would add something to the weekend mornings which now are simply repeats of Love Your Garden.

They can't do this as they use the weekend slots to fill their indie quota, GMB is made by ITV Studios so doesn't qualify.

I've double checked to see if I'm right and the license states:

Quote:The Licensee must ensure that in each calendar year not less than 25 per cent of the total amount of time allocated to the broadcasting of qualifying programmes is allocated to a range and diversity of independent productions. The range must be in terms of the cost and types of programmes.

www.ofcom.org.uk

Everything airing this weekend (including repeats) is made by indies.

I don't see how that is better than their current independent shows.

Also Love your Garden probably costs very little to repeat whereas GMB even recorded would cost money.

Why do people focus on overnight ratings? - It seems there are some people out there who can not or simply will not understand that overnight linear TV ratings mean nothing now - those days are long gone.

2.5 million overnight ratings may seem low, but as mentioned, the previous year it was 3.3 million, so just a drop of 800,000 which is to be expected, as most people do not watch live television anymore, are not willing to stay in and watch a long ceremony, and will prefer to simply watch clips.

Gavin and Stacey got over 11.6 million linear viewers on Christmas Day 2019. (17 million once iPlayer was factored in).

BGT’s 2020 series launched on 11.38 million.

I’m A Celeb 2022 launched on 12 million.

I’d hardly say linear ratings mean nothing or that those days are “long gone”.
