The TV Gameshow Thread

Commercial broadcasters are all sensitive to the advertisers, its how they make their money so if the advertisers are worried, they won't buy ad spaces so while we may be spared being told about the DFS sales that never frigging end, that doesn't make ITV any money. Programmes are bookends to the adverts after all.

Whether Twitter power has the impact it did (as per GB News above) and bearing in mind its now owned by Elon Musk who's done nothing but pee people off on Twitter due to various changes (and various people leaving for one reason or another), is probably up for debate.

For anyone interested, the UKGameshows.com/Bother's Bar Poll of the Year for 2022 is now open (closing date 9th Jan), results announced live on YouTube which is always good fun.

Last year's results for comparison are here if you can't or don't want to watch the video:

Only Connect has won The Golden Five since 2018. Will it retain the crown for 2022?

In fact I'm going to stick this here and wave some Early Instalment Weirdness around - A first series episode of Only Connect which now in hindsight looks a bit green:

Don’t know how to describe it but BBC4 era Only Connect and BBC2 era Only Connect have a very feel- they’re both fundamentally the same show but I feel it’s loosened up a bit more since the BBC2 move- the BBC4 eps felt somewhat stuffy.

I think regardless of channel changes that is quite common with long running shows - early series of Pointless and The Chase are noteably alot dryer for example.

Like I say - early instalment weirdness.
Early Pointless had all the banter chopped out of it, until Alexander Armstrong noticed and said it probably should be kept (and of course they changed the basic format of the game in the process).

Bullseye is probably the most obvious example of early instalment weirdness that comes to my mind (the first series is totally out of whack in many ways compared to what followed), but most tweaks of this nature tend to be relatively subtle, as seen above with Only Connect (which was more green initially, had the "walk" to the podium for the Connecting Wall and of course had Greek letters (which apparently were "too pretentious" and generated complaints (apparently), so they swapped them for Egyptian Hieroglyphs instead)

If something changes channel it doesn't always mean it will be majorly different - Eggheads moved to Channel 5 and AFAIK aside from some adverts it's mostly the same.

Victoria was more strict headmistress in the early series of Only Connect especially in the Connecting Wall round where she would say 'Not a Connection' everytime the team got something incorrect.

She was having to get used to doing something other than A History Of Corners Wink

Answers are Darts, Tankards, Bendy Bully Doll and Bus Fare Home.

Don't think I ever heard Bendy Bully referred to as a "doll"...

And as noted by Victoria only the parents not their children (even though they’re adult) on both teams buzzed in to answer, and all were correctly answered. It certainly made me feel a bit old.
