Of course when Weakest Link came along a big deal was made out of it and the host being mean. But that wasn't particularly "nasty" as such, it was just a moody host in a moody environment (and of course all that was toned down in later series anyway).
Some of Anne's comments were seen as nasty at the time but made it past the edit because they were deemed acceptable back then. Most of it was good natured ribbing though, thankfully.
Nowadays where creators make it part of a show's format for people to not get on and as if to signpost what is being done and because viewers don't complain at first somehow the format isn't the problem, that's a different thing altogether. It's understandable why shows like this get made because TV has to be entertaining and there isn't the desire and/or the profitability in making other types of shows, but it's still sad, IMO anyway.
