US Network Upfronts 2024/25
#1

These aren't quite the event they were but the 2024 Upfront season has begun with CBS showing it's hand first. It's probably the most solid of the networks at the moment and indeed has had to axe one or two quite popular shows just to make room on the schedule. A common theme this year is shows which were originally picked up for 2023/24 being carried over to 2024/25 due to the strike.

There is the shadow of another potential strike on the horizon with the IATSE (The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees which covers behind the scenes staff in TV and movies too) - but get the impression that is less likely to happen that last years strike.

Most the US networks have stopped doing pilot seasons in the way that was the norm for years, going for a commissioning approach more similar to the UK where shows are picked up from the script instead and ordered straight to series. CBS's main efforts are spin-offs from existing franchises with NCIS Origins and Young Sheldon spin off George and Mandy's First Marriage. Indeed a bit less interest from a UK perspective now shows tend to go straight to the streamers and US comedy and drama doesn't make up the linear schedules in the way it once did but if E4 has hidden a bit of money away from C4 then George and Mandy's First Marriage might follow in the footsteps of Young Sheldon and the Big Bang Theory.

IATSE going on strike won't really affect movies and they'll simply go overseas.

The point though, is that it WOULD affect TV shows. It'd be the second strike disrupted season in a row.

I imagine there is a contingency plan if it happens as it shoot episodes earlier so they have enough in the can.

I suspect it won't happen simply because IATSE members simply cannot afford another disrupted year.
