Perhaps it’ll be a brighter red with pulses or some other sort of animation for breaking news.

Are they trying to make us switch off so they can go to the government and say "nobody watches any more, so can we turn off this very expensive channel and send people to the website?"

At this point, why even bother with lower-thirds? It's so much opaque clutter to convey very little information. Just have a transparent DOG, and animate headline straps in and out as needed.
