The parent company of Bell Media, BCE, eliminated 4800 positions today. This includes many who work at Bell Media.
Some of the impacts include:
* The cancellation of ALL local noon hour newscasts on CTV, except on CFTO Toronto - effective immediately.
* The cancellation of ALL weekend 6 PM and 11:30 PM newscasts on CTV and CTV2, except at CFTO Toronto, CJOH Ottawa, and CFCF Montreal - - effective immediately.
* Cancelling local news on statutory holidays, except at CFTO Toronto.
* The elimination of the evening news programs on CTV News Channel (except Power Play), which is to be replaced with rolling news from 6-10 PM.
* The cancellation of some separate programs on BNN Bloomberg.
* The cancellation of CTV's long running news magazine W5.
Bell Media is also selling 45 radio stations, citing that radio is no longer a viable business.

Awful. Surprising they didn't copy Global's centralized system or the CBC's province-wide weekend newscasts. It looks like Global now has a bit of a monopoly in some "larger" markets. Now every holiday on CTV (outside Toronto) will be like Christmas where you don't get any local news. I wonder if they're going to simulcast the news channel tailored to each time zone to fill in the gaps.
I get the feeling many of the staff didn't even know and just found out today. Every time you see Bell's Let's Talk campaign you can't help but roll your eyes.

That's what gets me about Bell Media. They didn't bother doing what everyone else is doing in terms of streamlining news operations. Yeah, the production value that Global, CBC, and CityNews puts into most of their newscasts aren't as good as CTV's were, but they're still providing a public service.
Nothing against what Global News is offering, but it's crazy to think that in most of the country it's Global (and CityNews to a smaller extent) that's providing a localized news service on the weekends.

Think I've asked this before but did the CRTC approve Bell's earlier request to drop local news obligations for CTV and CTV2?

I don't believe a decision was made about this yet.

Bell can still get away with it as it looks like the weekdays still provide enough hours to meet the minimum requirements. And repeats of local newscasts also count. It's why some local stations repeat their late night newscasts in the morning.

The Lunar New Year celebrations segment in the Perth bulletin featured a lightbox decorated with Chinese lanterns, which is a nice touch IMO:

They've clearly taken some inspiration from RTL Aktuell...
