TV Mistakes/Breakdowns

Interesting to hear the prints had adverts in, I wouldn't have expected that.

They didn’t for obvious reasons, what US prints did sometimes have were short simple graphics interspersed throughout the print that simply stated ‘Insert commercial here’.

That makes more sense, and I have seen examples of that before.

MeTV played master film reels of shows like Gunsmoke in the past decade or so complete with these slides while MeTV added their own breaks at different spots. Although most of their copies are from the 70's or the Viacom copies from the 90's

2 examples of the "Place Commercial Here" from outside the UK and US that they left in.

First off, from an unknown channel from 2001 during the 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo.

Second, during an episode of Star Trek on a Portuguese channel called SIC Radical.

And finally, "Sponsors Message" during a mid 2010's showing of Gunsmoke on MeTV.

That's the analogue equivalent of leaving this in a programme:

Breakdowns at closedown, the ones less people saw. There must be examples of Breakdowns at closedown! One I think of is a channel 4 closedown, and the announcers mic was still on, and you hear her saying "thanks, I never had a chance to say goodnight "!

I remember that. It was Sabrina Farley during her very brief stint at Channel 4 in 1983. Also, there’s the example from the early days where the mic is left open after closedown, and we hear a telephone call (from Tony Currie, no less) advising duty announcer David Stranks about the situation.

And here it is (complete with another example of gallery talkback somehow making it on air)

Meanwhile, a very tongue-in-cheek BFBS closedown that didn't quite go to plan in February 1998 - with an incredibly flustered Gary Woodford on announcing duty (think BFBS continuity was self-op?)

I don't think there would have been many breakdowns at closedown, it was generally quite a simple sequence and most mistakes could be styled out. There's this one where a magazine trail fell off air
