BBC Breakfast

I went on a public tour of Studio B after they moved to Oxford Road. It was during the time they had either the 'bonking worms' logo or the map on display. They didn't seem to use much of the actual studio space. I do recall that the walls of the set seemed to be covered in grey corduroy, but perhaps it was to diffuse light.

It was better than what they had at Studio N at Piccadilly Gardens, which was essentially a former board room above a NatWest Bank. I can't find the YT video showing the tour of it.

I think they'll be happy to get the IKEA flat pack set, although why someone chose such an oddly shaped office space to create a TV studio could perhaps be down to the strength of the beer in that part of the country.  Tongue

EDIT I found the video of Studio N.

All the time when I used to live down there and pop into city and arrive in Piccadilly Gardens by bus. A bit of TV and radio history was right under one's nose.

The floor space in the new studio is smaller than the current studio, however it has height and is a rectangle shape and as such utilises all sides.

With the tower screens on the outside of the studio I'm guessing there may be a fixed camera(s) outside the studio that can be used to show the studio and those screens. This presumably helps make the studio space feel bigger still, a bit like with trundle cam for studio E at NBH. Speculating, I could imagine from the Breakfast titles cutting to such a the fixed camera, before cutting to a camera inside the set.

Any ideas what NWT will do for their Breakfast bulletins? Will they move into the main studio (currently used by Breakfast), the secondary set which Sport had decamped to, or their current tiny secondary space.

Formerly 'Charlie Wells' of TV Forum.

Don't really see why NWT need to move their Breakfast bulletins - presumably the current set up is cheaper and requires less staff than moving to the main studio.

As for Breakfast and those screens outside the studio - hopefully they're utilised as presentation points too and the presenters and reporters can venture outside the glass box.

I understand delays to the Breakfast project and other infrastructure projects in the building has pushed back the new NWT set, so no changes soon.
I would imagine once they got their new set there’s no reason why they couldn’t use it for Breakfast opts like other regions.

I'd imagine they'd just use their main set for regional breakfast opts from Monday.  It's controlled by the same gallery as the new Breakfast/Sport studio, so is already staffed.

EDIT: However, you've got me intrigued as to what they'll do, so now I've set the tellybox to record 'BBC One NW HD' on Monday morning. Tongue

I concur slightly.

This set was in my view partially inspired by what was going on at the time in TC7 down in Television Centre. I think the Barcos and frosted glass design wasn't too bad to be honest and it looked reasonably modern-ish. The background colour was far worse when it launched in the short lived but very memorable era:

When the switch in colour of the background curtain ended up going from blue to red it went a bit of a way to make it look decent. The one thing that I do remember from way back in the Blue Place and agreed with was that the desk and "soft" areas needed to be on the TC7 style rostra 'Baking Trays' as I recall the nickname for them at the time.
