Over in New Zealand, it has been announced the WBD have announced that Newshub will be closing down in a few months, and news programming on Three will cease.
Quote:Warner Bros. Discovery has today commenced consultation on a proposed remodelling and restructure of its ANZ free-to-air business in New Zealand. The proposal includes the closure of all Newshub’s multiplatform news operations and output, and new local programming would only be in collaboration with local funding bodies and other partners.
James Gibbons, President, Asia Pacific, Warner Bros. Discovery says this is not a proposal the business arrived at easily.
“We are acutely aware of our position in the local media landscape and what this means for our people, and for the country as a whole.
“There was no single trigger that caused this, rather it was a combination of negative events in New Zealand and globally. The impacts of the economic downturn have been severe, and the bounce back has not materialised as expected.
“Advertising revenue in New Zealand has disappeared far more quickly than our ability to manage this reduction, and to drive the business to profitability.“Everyone can see that the media sector, here in New Zealand, and around the world is facing some very tough circumstances. While Warner Bros. Discovery is a large global media company, each business is managed on its ability to sustain itself within the market it operates in. Subsidising losses for ongoing years indefinitely is not sustainable.
Understandably, this news is going down very badly. If the plans proceed in their current form, the only TV news will be from either TVNZ, and a single daily bulletin on Sky Open.
I kissed a gull and I liked it!

Isn't the Sky Open bulletin also produced by WBD? I'm guessing that's gotta be impacted in some way as well. You're basically down to just one 6pm bulletin from TVNZ.

As drastic as it is, not terribly surprising considering the gradual cutback in output over the past year or so, losing mid-morning and mid-evening bulletins, along with their own version of The Project and AM Early.
There was supposed to be a new 7pm current affairs show due to launch, but that was delayed - and presumably with WBD all but pulling out of local production, that will fall by the wayside.
To the outsider, TV3 seems to have been left teetering on the edge financially throughout its history - it was already in receivership within just six months of launch - and as one of their 6pm anchors, Mike McRoberts, has pointed out tonight, if WBD can't make it work then who can?
A bit of sobering commentary from The Spinoff's Duncan Greive.

That's terrible. Pretty concerned that this is what Canadian broadcasters want too but can't do because of licence requirements.

Given the circumstances, some excellent - and very probing - coverage from Newshub of their own demise.

CBC is expected to be privatised if the Conservatives win the next Canadian election as the pools suggest they will do.

It's a truly shocking development for my Kiwi counterparts.
It's bad for democracy, bad for all the journalists, producers, editors etc who are facing some very painful months ahead, and bad for a major television network.

Canada is in a bad way. With CTV cutbacks and such. But i wonder if this CBC thing will actually happen. I wonder how that will go over with the Canadian public. Having said that the situation the situation is dire. I think more shocking cutbacks will be coming it the advertising market doesnt pickup. BUt in the age of streaming.........its unlikely to change. I think these smaller countries are seeing what the future of commercial telly looks like, but with no idea what can be done. I dont know that anyone knows. People are abandoning traditional tv in droves. In North America for years people have been ripped off for the cost of paytv and internet. Now they are just dumping paying and strictly going with streaming. Killing the bottom line of some paytv providers.
